When you walk into the Boothbay Playhouse for the first time, you feel the weight of its history. The exposed beams overhead tell stories from 1937, when this post and beam barn theatre first opened its doors. We've spent years restoring every detail, from the antique stained glass windows we brought over from an 1800s Irish chapel to the original wood that frames the entire space. Now, we're ready to help you write your own story into this building's legacy.
Why Couples Choose a Historic Midcoast Maine Venue
Location matters when you're planning a wedding. Midcoast Maine gives you coastal scenery without the crowds you'd find further south. The Boothbay area sits close enough to Portland and Boston for guests traveling from those cities, but far enough away to feel like a true destination.
A Theatre Built for Your Biggest Performance
The main theatre spans about 4,000 square feet in a T-shape that gives your guests room to move naturally from cocktails to dinner to dancing. Two balconies overlook the space, and farmhouse-style chandeliers can dim to whatever mood you need. The large dance floor sits at the heart of it all, and when you're ready for a quieter moment, the lounge wing gives you another 2,000 square feet with an art deco bar and a brick fireplace that actually works.

Your ceremony deserves its own stage. Our outdoor ceremony space comes with benches, a white pergola, and antique farmhouse double doors that frame your entrance. After vows, your guests can spill out onto the covered porch and stone patio while you steal a few minutes together.
We can host 40 guests for an intimate gathering or scale up to 200. The farmhouse tables are eight feet long, and we've paired them with cross-back chairs that look right at home under those old beams. You'll also get a sweetheart table, six high-top cocktail tables, and tables for gifts and seating cards.
Service That Shows Up When You Need It
John and Sara Berkeley own the Playhouse, and they're here for every wedding. They both come from client service backgrounds, and it shows. When you book with us, you're getting a day-of coordinator as part of your package. That person acts as your stage manager, handling logistics so you can focus on the person you're marrying.
Our parking attendant arrives an hour before your event starts to help your guests find spots in our lot, which holds 80 vehicles. If you have guests staying in Boothbay, we do suggest hiring a shuttle service. It keeps everyone safe and makes the most of the parking we have.
Food and Drinks on Your Terms
We hold a full Maine liquor and catering license, so all bar and catering service comes through us. But we're happy to work with you on customizing your drink menu. You can shape it to match your style, from craft cocktails to local beers.
Our catering is fully customizable, too. We'll build a menu around your tastes and your budget, and our commercial kitchen gives us the space to execute it well. Whether you want a plated dinner or a lobster bake, we have the setup to make it happen.
What's Included and What You'll Handle Separately
Your rental gives you exclusive access to the entire building and grounds. Your rental includes exclusive access to the 6,000-square-foot venue, outdoor ceremony space, and get-ready spaces of the Suite with two salon stations and a sink, as well as the Den featuring a leather lounge area. We provide setup and cleanup, so you're not worrying about tables and chairs at midnight.

You're required to get day-of-event coverage through our insurance partner. It's a standard step that protects you and gives us both peace of mind. Your vendors will need to provide proof of general liability insurance, too, including those from our preferred list.
We're open from mid April to mid-December. Maine winters are unpredictable, and the building's age means we close during the coldest months. If you're planning a wedding in that window, reach out early so we can lock in your date.
How the Day Flows in This Space
Most couples hold their ceremony outdoors, then move guests to the covered porch and stone patio for cocktail hour. From there, it's a natural transition into the main theatre for dinner and dancing. The Suite gives your wedding party a place to get ready with comfortable seating and good lighting. The Den does the same for the other side.
The two balconies offer a different perspective if guests want to watch the dancing from above, or if they want to make a dramatic entrance. The candle wall backdrop and dimmable chandeliers let you shift the energy as the night goes on.
The Boothbay Setting
We're located at 275 Wiscasset Road in Boothbay, about ten miles from several local inns if your guests need a place to stay. Cod Cove Inn, Five Gables Inn, Harborage Inn, Smuggler's Cove Inn, and Sea Maine Vacation Rentals are all within easy reach. If you want to explore the area with your photographer, Boothbay Harbor and the surrounding coastline offer plenty of options.
The Playhouse sits on the former Jasper Wyman farm. The building has been part of this community since 1937. Over eight decades, it hosted actors, and National Geographic even featured it in 1968. When John and Sara bought it in 2020, they spent years restoring it, and now you get to be part of what comes next.
Events Beyond Weddings
We host more than weddings. Family reunions, corporate gatherings, lobster bakes, elopements, rehearsal dinners, retirement parties, celebrations of life, class reunions, and other milestones and birthday parties all fit here. If you have a reason to celebrate and you need a space with character, please reach out.
